Sequin Surprise Pillow

At age 7, this was the first craft I watched my daughter spend weeks and weeks on. She’ll color for 10 or 15 minutes every few days. I love that she chose to fill in the entire background of this pillow. This crafty gift can be found on Amazon for under $20. We received this pillow as a gift from Grandma, and we have since gifted this doodle pillow to other art-loving elementary-aged girls, too. The pricing makes this an ideal school-friend birthday gift.

Scratch and Sketch / Scratch and Draw Books

Scratch and Draw gift book for artistic kids. Behind the black scratchable surface are patterns, swirls, holographic foil, and more!

My niece found this gem at the Monterrey Aquarium gift shop, but you can purchase it online and from Amazon, too, for about $15. The Trace-Along Scratch and Sketch series are beautifully made (the spiral ring makes them easy to use, too) and so fun! Behind the black scratchable surface are patterns, swirls, holographic foil, and more! We’re all for making your own Scratch and Sketch art (or Scratch and Draw art), but these books make fantastic gifts for artistic kids! They’re also perfect for keeping kids busy during car rides and airplane trips!

Must-have art supplies for kids who love art

Set of Gel Pens

We love our colored gel pen set ($12 on Amazon), especially its brilliant colors and glittery sparkle. Whether on paper or fall leaves, our gel pen set did not disappoint. Just be careful not to drag your hand through the wet ink.

Gel pens are great art supplies for elementary-aged artists.

Diamond or Crystal Painting Kit

We just received a Crystal Painting Kit as a birthday gift for an eight-year-old girl! It’s a true hit! I think this gift would work for 7 to 15-year-olds well, but honestly, even adults will find this fun. My daughter worked on it for about 3.5 hours to complete one design.

Crystal (diamond) art painting. A creative gift for kids who love art!
Crystal painting kits have lots of designs. Most kits include designs that both young boys and girls will think are cool – like sharks and turtles!

How it works: the canvas has printed colorful circles with letters or symbols in the center. There are bags of crystals with printed letters or symbols that match. You use the pens to pick up a crystal and place it on the canvas. The canvas is coated with sticky glue that grabs the crystal.

Tips: Be careful; my daughter spilled the crystal tray many, many times. The good news, there are LOTS of extra crystals in each color. Also, when just beginning, my daughter got her hand and arm stuck on the canvas many times. I put the plastic film back on the canvas to keep her from sticking. Don’t do this. The plastic sticks terribly.
